Cork revolution!

You started your revolution WITHOUT PLASTIC and you still don't know how to store your solid cosmetics? Our virgin and biodegradable cork container is obtained from the bark of the cork oak, handcrafted by small Sardinian artisans. By its nature, cork is perfect for your solid cosmetics because it absorbs moisture and dries immediately, thus making sure is carefree their transport.

Thanks Sardinia!

Sardinia, in fact, every year alone supplies the two thirds of national production of cork of which the largest share comes from the triangle Luras-Tempio Pausania-Calangianus, in the wildest Gallura. Here, the cork plants are so abundant and the extractors, called "lu bucadori", so expert and prepared that they have made this area of the island a real excellence recognized in the world. Calangianus, in particular, it is considered to all intents and purposes "the capital of cork" which, in fact, includes about 150 craft companies in the sector that have allowed the town to be included, since 1979, in the list of the 100 municipalities of the little big Italy, that is to say the ranking of the 100 most industrialized countries of the boot.

Corteccia di sughero

In fact, one cannot improvise cork growers. This activity requires careful preparation as well as great patience. To obtain abundant and good quality production respecting their healthin fact, the plants must have reached at least 10 years of age. If skinning is done ahead of time, the tree will deteriorate and its productivity is irremediably compromised. It is therefore important that the plants have reached the right degree of development, and only then can the so-called de-tapping be carried out, that is to say the removal of the male cork, or cork, of poor quality, paying particular attention to engrave the only the tuberous part of the stem without causing damage to the plant. After this operation the tree begins to produce the best cork (female or gentle) which becomes more and more thick and is ready for extraction only after, at least, another nine years. Once the removal has been carried out, it takes as many years for the plant to be ready for a new extraction. Therefore, we continue with the same rhythms for the entire life cycle of the forest which can be up to 100 years. The extraction activity is always carried out during the summer season and involves, from time to time, an increasingly larger surface of the trunk until it reaches the branches.

A breath of oxygen

Its main function for us human beings is certainly the filtering action that operates on the air, cleaning it from impurities, from the pollution that we introduce into the atmosphere. This its to filter the air, of which it retains carbon dioxide releasing pure oxygen, is even increased tenfold when the cork is extracted from the oak, which being composed for the most part of carbon forces the plant, for its regeneration, to absorb an enormous amount of CO2.

Instead, unfortunately, they are witnessing their partial deterioration. An abandonment not so slow that it could, in the short term, reduce their surface due to the bad conditions in which they find themselves. Why this? Unfortunately, the invasion of plastic caps is reducing the demand for cork on the market and consequently we are witnessing a gradual abandonment of corks, which, as already underlined for some years also by the WWF, could lead to a worsening of quality, degradation and even decimation and disappearance, in a short time. After millennia of use for different uses, cork risks becoming a useless material, all only for obvious economic reasons. Instead, all the other advantages should also be put on the scales.

The family LOV, on its own scale, it does not claim to change the world, but is convinced that awakening consciences is a beginning towards a collective improvement for a more sustainable world. We try every day to take one impossible step at a time!
